Tell me questions Q: Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey. A: The brakes should not feel slack or spongy when pressed. Also the brakes should be tested as you slowly move off. (The vehicle should stop and not pull to one side). Q: Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked. A: Its found in the Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps. Q: Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash. A: The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Q: Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road. A: There should be no cuts or bulges in the walls of the tyres. The tread depth should be 1.6mm across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. Q: Tell me how you would check that the headlights & tail lights are working. A: I would Turn on the ignition and then switch on the headlights and walk round the vehicle and check that the lights are all working. Q: Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti locking braking system. A: A warning light should illuminate on the dashboard panel if there is a fault Q: Tell me how you would check that the direction indicators are working. A: I would Apply the hazard warning switch and walk around car to check all indicators are working. Q: Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. A: I would operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help. Q: Tell me how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey. A: I would start the engine and apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel, this should result in a slight but noticeable movement of the wheel. Alternatively I can turn the steering wheel just after moving Q: Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them. A: Turn on the ignition and then switch on the headlights and the fog lights. Check that a warning light comes on. Explain that fog lights are to be used when visibility is less them 100m. Q: Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the ain beam is on whilst inside the car A: Turn on the ignition. Now switch on the headlights and then the main beam. You will now have a blue light on the dash board Q: Tell me how you would check the engine oil level was sufficient. A: I would remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, re-dip it and check of oil level against the min/max markers. Q: : Tell me how you would check the engine coolant level was correct. A: I would point to the engine coolant reservoir and explain how the level should be between the min/max marker. Q: Tell me how you would check the brake fluid reservoir is at a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid. A: I would point to the brake fluid reservoir and explain how the level should be between the min/max marker. The Show me Tell me questions The Show me Tell me questions are the questions the Car Test Examiner will ask you before your test. They will ask two questions, one before you move off and one while you are driving.
